Doug started his insurance career in 1982 knowing that his passion for entrepreneurship would provide him an opportunity to make a difference in the industry. Although it is hard for many of us to picture our fearless leader wearing bell bottoms and sporting a (permed) “afro”, we have managed to see past his worst fashion faux pas, and support him in seeing the vision for Advocate come to life in our day to day interactions. Deep down inside little “Dougie” still enjoys hockey, and secretly dreams of the career he would have loved to have had as a child but the reality is, he has more talent for Insurance than he ever did with the skates strapped on! Doug has dedicated his time to serving the community with a commitment to bring “integrity” to the Insurance Industry. For the last 3 years he has volunteered on the Executive Board for the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) and he will serve as President in 2016. The vision he has for Advocate has allowed us to differentiate ourselves from our competitors and we appreciate that!

Scott started his insurance career right out of high school, making him one of the youngest brokers to ever hold an insurance license. Scott didn’t know right away if he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He spent 3 years as a Reservist in the Canadian Forces, training and learning the disciplines associated with defending our country. Today, Scott has become one of our resident “experts” in all things insurance. In addition to expertly advising our commercial clients he has a knack for the technical, don't be shocked if you see him under one of our desks fixing our technical problems! Scott, or Scooter as we fondly call him, enjoys hunting and making us all laugh with his jokes or pranks. He is a breath of fresh air in the insurance industry and proudly serves as the President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Waterloo Region.
Director of Personal Lines
Sara brings with her over 20 years' of experience in the insurance industry, although she says it makes her feel old realizing it has been that long. Born and raised in Kitchener-Waterloo, she followed in her Father and Grandfather’s shoes pursuing an insurance career. An unusual path considering she studied medieval and ancient English at University! Sara holds her Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designations. She enjoys giving back to our community and was selected as the 2016 award recipient for Volunteer of the Year, by the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce. Sara's extensive marketing experience and understanding of Human Resources is an asset to the Advocate team; she "gets" the Advocate vision and values and is dedicated to employee engagement.

As a little girl, with her poufy bangs almost 3 inches high, Kelly dreamed of being an architect. Well, her career plans did not end up going in that direction. Kelly traded in her architectural scales used in the process of design for her passion for people, farms, horses and all things agriculture. As a licensed professional broker, she makes sure her clients have the coverage they need to protect their assets, livelihood and future. In her spare time, Kelly enjoys cleaning out horse stalls (really? this is getting weirder by the minute). Kelly enjoys spending time with her family, is an avid dog lover and is a great new addition to our commercial sales team. You can count on her to provide you with the best coverage for your specific needs with a personal touch.

Joe always dreamed of being an Insurance Broker (somehow we just don’t think this is true, but we will go with it) making him an ideal fit for the Advocate team! His knack for building relationships is an asset in his role as Commercial Account Executive. When Joe isn’t at work, he can be found spending time with his family at the Bruce Peninsula. When asked if he could be any animal what would he choose, his reply, “a bird of prey like an eagle or a hawk”. Didn’t see that coming, should we be worried? As a member of the Advocate team you can count on Joe to offer the best advice for all your commercial insurance needs.

In 2002 Ashley followed in her Mother’s footsteps launching her career in the insurance industry. Even though she hoped to one day become a marine biologist, learning to study the ins outs of insurance has allowed her to skillfully educate and advise our commercial clients. We find it amusing that her nickname growing up was “little eagle” especially considering she would choose to be a bird, if she could be any animal in world! Wow, she takes her family name seriously. With her 3 young children keeping her busy at home those wings could come in handy.

Ilona joined the Advocate team in 2009. We asked her if she could be ANY animal in the world, what would she choose? She quickly replied “a bear, so I could hibernate in the winter”! She may not enjoy the cold winter months, but she does enjoy dining on butter chicken at her favorite local restaurant. As a little girl she thought one day she would become a nurse. Insurance is a far cry from working in the medical field, but her “care” for others is a part of what makes her a valuable member of the Advocate Commercial Lines team!

Bill brings laughter to our team whether he’s using his “2 finger typing” method or showing up to work wearing his shirt inside out, or perhaps getting dressed in the dark which resulted in wearing 2 different shoes to work. When he isn’t making us laugh, Bill can be counted on to lend a hand with his vast expertise. Bill started his career in insurance in 1988; he has witnessed the countless changes that have impacted this industry which is why we consider him an “expert” in so many ways. If Bill wasn’t an Insurance Sales Specialist he would be an animal that DOESN’T have a hunting season! We think that is a very wise choice Bill.

Matt joins his father Jim and sister Meaghan working here at Advocate. As a member of the sales team, Matt has spent his career serving the local community by building relationships with his clients while spending his weekends chasing after his 4 children. Even though he hoped he would one day be drafted by the NHL, he has come to love coaching his children's athletic teams. We think his busy personal life explains how he showed up for work one day with his shirt inside out! Matt’s calm, pleasant and patient demeanor is one of his greatest assets.

Steve, or Fischer Price as we like to call him, joined the Advocate team in 2015. He is an avid fisherman (get the nickname now?) which he likes to do with his Saint Bernard, Tucker. This certainly makes him the owner of the largest dog in our Advocate family. Steve patiently and genuinely serves his customers. Steve shares a passion for trying new things, whether its food or participating in an Advocate event, he is all in! If we are lucky, maybe one day his Mom will show us a picture of the day he wore light spandex blue shorts with a yellow racing stripe to school.

Ellen generally does not consider herself the adventurous sort and when asked what the most exotic thing she ever ate was, her face looked disgusted when she replied: “a bug that flew in my mouth!” Yuck, many of us have had that experience and feel the same way! Ellen dreamed of being a mother one day which makes her very proud of her children, one of which has followed in her footsteps working as a member of the Advocate team (see bio for Ashley Eagle). Strangely, our very petite Ellen would choose to be a giraffe if she were an animal; perhaps she would like to see the world from another perspective. Ellen with her comprehensive experience has now become our inside trainer and can often be found wearing many other hats serving clients and lending a hand wherever it’s needed. Growing up, her nickname was “Ellie” we fittingly call her “Sensei”.
Sarah is a foodie at heart, although having said that she thinks "cucumber soup" was the most adventurous thing she has ever eaten. Either way, this makes her a great fit for the Advocate team. When she isn't busy serving our clients or working as a volunteer on our Hospitality Committee, she is running after her 2 little boys! Luckily, Sarah decided to pursue a career in Insurance rather than following her little girl dream of being a nurse. Why? The sight of blood makes her weak in the knees. We are grateful that her fashion taste has become more refined as she has matured, apparently at one point in her life she thought neon pink full size troll earrings was a thing.
Lena, aka Portuguese Princess, loves reading romance novels. In addition to her passion for reading is a love of all things “girlie”. So much so, we don’t know if she OWNS a pair of flats. Even though she didn’t grow up to be a teacher ( we see a pattern here) she HAS spent the last 17 years strapping on her high heels to teach her clients about the coverage they need. On another note, in addition to being bilingual, Lena hands down makes THE best tuna sandwiches! (Lena thank you for sharing your secret recipe, however, we think you left out an ingredient. We just can’t seem to make them the way you do).
Personal Recovery Coordinator
Linda initially joined the Advocate team in 1999 serving as the receptionist. Years later the vision to bring personalized service to our clients with a dedicated personal recovery coordinator was birthed. Linda boldly stepped into this new role. Her passion for people during the time of a crisis is a part of what makes her so successful in her position. Linda has wowed us on more than one occasion with her talent to juggle. Whether its balls, pylons or hairspray bottles, this girl has talent! Linda is passionate about the vision and values here at Advocate. During dinnertime with her family she proudly shares the difference we are making not only with our clients but in the community as well.

Caroline’s nickname growing up was pickle and although she dreamed of one day being a marine biologist, she soon realized her career path would take her in a different direction. Now, instead of studying the ocean and it's many wondrous creatures, she crunches numbers. Caroline hasn’t lost her sense of adventure however; she once enjoyed exploring the beauty of Australia, scuba diving, hang-gliding and even tempting her taste buds dining on Kangaroo tail! Caroline has been a part of the Advocate family since 2007. When asked what her greatest fashion “faux pas” was, she didn't hesitate to reply, “it's a daily occurrence”.
Tiffany defied the odds from the very first day she was born. As a 1 1/2 pound “preemie" she took her place in the world. To this day she has proven to be a risk taker. Tiffany grew up on her parents Elk farm where she learned the disciplines of hard work and an appreciation for nature and animals. Tiffany started her career in insurance in 2001. Little did she know she would meet her future husband in the insurance industry! Today,Tiffany is a proud mother of her 2 little girls while being an avid dog lover. Tiffany says she probably has had many fashion faux pas over the years. For us, we have come to love her cute ponytail.
Judy started her insurance career in 1977. To this day she continues to work part time at Advocate, showing her dedication to make a difference and contribute to the success of the organization. Judy not only loves her own cats, if she could be an animal that’s what she would choose, "what a life" she declares. As colleagues we all long for the days when Judy brings in something she has baked from home. You will witness a stampede if she does, truly if WE could choose an alternative career for her, it would be for her to own a restaurant (in our plaza of course)!

Maria enjoys the spring and summer months when she can spend time in her garden. Is it a coincidence that in her younger days wearing denim coveralls with one strap done up was part of her signature style? Maria decided to put away her coveralls for a career in Insurance. For more than 13 years Maria has provided support to the Sales and Service department as a dedicated member of the processing team. Maria shares her time and talents as a member of the Social Committee. Her laughter and outgoing nature make her an ideal person to serve in this capacity. It’s hard to say who has the most infectious laugh in our office, Penny, Judy or Maria. Either way, we are happy to have her on the team.
Lynne joined our team in 2016 bringing years of experience and a genuine passion for creating exceptional client experiences. “Lynnie”, her nickname growing up, enjoys playing board games and spending time in the water. She enjoys the water so much she told us if she could be ANY animal, she would be a dolphin. You can tell by her picture she traded in her 50 plus jelly bracelets, fluorescent clothes, banana clips and stirrup pants (her wardrobe staples growing up in the 90's) for a more mature and professional wardrobe.
Marika’s passion for people and life are evident as soon as you meet her. Clients are warmly welcomed with a smile and exceptional hospitality by Marika, who is a member of our reception team. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, her Yorkshire Terrier and when time permits, she enjoys the art of “quilling”. We are confident you will agree, Marika is a wonderful addition to the Advocate team!
